By Maisie J Duncan

Are your kids studying textiles at school? Do you know what sewing supplies they might need?

Well, if you're interested in knowing what the basic supplies are then you've come to the right place. There are several different things that you'll need for a basic task but there are also some other items that you may be interested in for a larger and more complex project.sewing

So, the basic things you'll need start with a sewing machine. If you're creating something that needs to be high quality then usually stitching by hand is a no no. However, you don't always have to use a sewing machine to get good results - it really depends on the project. If it's for school or college then chances are they'll supply sewing machines for you to use.

Thread is one of the most obvious sewing supplies that you'll need but it's important to think about what sort of thread. There are various different kinds available. Thicker threads will be needed for something that requires strength such as a bag or an item of clothing. Thinner threads can be used for smaller items like purses and small handbags.

You'll also need a couple of needles. There's no point in buying just one because chances are you'll lose it and then you're back to square one. Buy a pack of perhaps 5 needles to ensure that you won't lose them all. Buying a variety of needles will also give you more options in terms of stitch and thread.

You will also need to buy some material - obviously - so make sure that you think about this before you go shopping. Stores like Fabric Land offer a good range but you can also find a range of fabric stores on the web so have a look online too. Consider the length you'll need in metres - you cut the pattern from this.

Overall, buying sewing supplies isn't rocket science but it's always handy to have a list of things that you'll need for a basic sewing task or project. If you're doing a project for school then you might want to ask your teacher for a list of items that you'll need - most of them will probably be supplied for you.
